Future of Hardware: The Side Hustle
San Francisco, CA, United States
Details +
Details -
San Francisco, CA, United States

Welcome to another installment of the Future of Hardware Meetup! Our topic this time is The Side Hustle - how anyone can make money creating or working in hardware. It’s not necessary to quit your day job to pursue selling hardware products, and there’s certainly nothing wrong with a crowdfunding campaign that funds your next vacation. With end-to-end product development software like Fusion 360, crowdfunding platforms that connect your product to millions of customers, and accessible manufacturing services, the time has never been better to pursue that side project that’s been rattling around your brain! We’re lucky enough to have three guest speakers come share their experiences selling hardware products on the side, and what they’ve learned along the way. Here’s the lineup: Jonathan Odom, Instructables Jonathan is a Bay Area maker, artist and designer. Curiosity and a dedication to making has led him to explore a diverse range of disciplines including film, special effects, animatronics, architecture, museum exhibit design, furniture design, parklets, and industrial design. He is currently a designer at Instructables Design Studio at the Autodesk Pier 9 Workshop in San Francisco and is an adjunct professor at Academy of Art University in the School of Architecture. Greg Peltz, Bonelab Greg is an experienced modeler at Pixar, and as a side business has created Bonelab - skeleton model kits that can be easily assembled with any special tools or glue. Doing business through his Etsy store, Greg has done over 1000 sales. Ben Lorimore, Space Cradle Ben is a rising sophomore at Western Washington University pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science in Industrial Design, and also a Fusion 360 Community Intern at Autodesk. During the summer between high school and college, Ben designed an ergonomic wood and leather hand rest for 3D mice, launched a Kickstarter campaign, and successfully fulfilled all orders. _________________________________ As always, food and drinks will be provided, and we look forward to seeing you there! Join this Meetup to comment.

Welcome to the first Future of Hardware Meetup! Our topic this time is Tools: desktop machines, generative design software, IoT, or even reverse engineering services. We’re always looking for guest speakers to share their work and bring everyone up to speed on tools to help propel their business. (Reach out if you'd like to be a guest speaker!) We’ll also looking at the broader Roadmap of Fusion 360; showcase Tips and Tricks; as well as Shape Optimization, one of the latest features in Fusion 360, and a very handy tool for optimizing your designs. Here’s the lineup: Curt Chan, Fusion 360 Evangelist | Autodesk Brad Tallis, Fusion 360 Technical Specialist | Autodesk We make software for people who make things. Fusion 360 is the first 3D CAD, CAM, and CAE tool of its kind. It connects your entire product development process in a single cloud-based platform that works on both Mac and PC. Randy Kopf | Desktop Artisan Randy has had a life long career in manufacturing, ranging from a Journeyman Machinist to Mold Maker. He currently is a proud owner of a desktop 5-axis Pocket NC, and will be demonstrating it live onsite. Derrick McBreairty | FARO Technolgies 3D Scanning has been around for decades, but it’s just starting to see widespread adoption. From video games to historical preservation, the applications are endless. For this presentation, we’ll focus on and reverse engineering applications. ___________________________ As always, food and drinks will be provided, and we look forward to seeing you there!

Meetup: Summer Sheetmetal Challenge! - Portland
Portland, OR, United States
Details +
Details -
Portland, OR, United States

Friends, we’ve got a great reason to get together: SHEETMETAL. Yes, one of the most anticipated enhancements of the summer is finally here and it’s time to dig into its capabilities. Bring your laptop. Bring your creativity. Come join us Wednesday, August 23th at the swanky (and air conditioned) CENTRL EASTSIDE for an evening of Fusion sheetmetal. We’ll have on hand Fusion Sheetmetal Product Manager Mike Prom to share insights, tips and ideas. The pizza and beer will be at its absolute most nourishing. This isn’t just a powerpoint though. Come ready to model (mini hackathon style) because we’re all going to submit entries to: “The Autodesk Fusion 360 Sheet Metal Challenge” To celebrate the release of sheet metal in Fusion 360, we’re putting on a brand new sheet metal-themed challenge. We need YOU to help design a new sheet metal bumper. We teamed up with 3D scanning company FARO to scan the front end of the truck and turned it into a template for you to use. (The dataset will be provided within Fusion when the new August update goes live). So, let your creative juices flow and start creating your own bumper design: [What’ll they get Vanna?] National Prizes include: 1st place – Flight to San Francisco, CA to experience the manufacturing of your design +2017 Autodesk University pass. We will cut, bend, weld and put the new bumper on the truck together (For San Francisco manufacturing experience flight and hotel are included. AU pass covers admission only.) 2nd place – 2017 AU pass (admission only) 3rd place – Fusion 360 Swag package Additionally we’ll have local awards for the best entries created over the night. We fully expect Portland to make a competitive showing so come ready to rock! If you're new to sheetmetal, that's fine too. Lots of happy to help mentors will be around to offer tips and ideas. Location: CENTRL EASTSIDE 329 NE Couch Street Portland, Oregon 97232 (Note: this is not CENTRL in the Pearl where we met earlier in the year!) See you all in a few weeks! Full details about the sheet metal challenge be found here. Very Best, Mike

Details -
San Francisco, CA, United States

DESCRIPTION Welcome to another installment of the Future of Hardware Meetup! For this event, we’ll be digging into some of the newest advancements in Additive Manufacturing, and how these changes are beginning to impact the way we design + manufacture products. See what people said about past events: https://www.meetup.com/future-of-hardware/events/241149197/ Agenda: 6:00 - Doors Open (Food + Drinks) 6:30 - Kickoff, Taylor Stein -- Autodesk 6:45 - Presenter, Matt Hovanec -- Project Escher 7:05 - Presenter, Nathan Fuller -- FormForge 7:25 - Presenter, TBD 7:45 - Networking + Presenter Open Chat Time 8:30 - Doors Closed Details: Traditionally, modeling software has given engineers and designers the power to create anything we can imagine in a digital space, but going from bits-to-atoms isn’t always a guarantee. We find ourselves altering designs, simplifying features, and sacrificing functionality for the sake of “manufacturability”. That’s why we are very excited to announce a group of speakers that are taking Additive Manufacturing to the next level! Check them out plus read a little about what they’re working on: Matt Hovanec, Project Escher - Autodesk Project Escher is a parallel processing system where numerous independent tools work together to fabricate a design. Through software and control strategy, Project Escher enables a new manufacturing architecture. Nathan Fuller, FormForge FormForge’s freeform additive technology combines the speed of automotive-scale 3D printing with the power and flexibility of industrial robotic arms, unlocking designs that were previously impossible. TBD -- Reach out to us? -- thefutureofhardware@gmail.com Are you, or someone you know, doing something big in the additive manufacturing space? Shoot us an email and we’ll see if there is a fit for you to jump into the last speaker role!
